Judy Clay's real name is Judy Guions. Prior to her solo soul music career she sang gospel with the Drinkard Singers, whose lineup also included Cissy Houston. A few of their performances were released on records. She's well known in Northern Soul circles thanks to You busted my mind; her claim to fame on the charts was Private number, that beautiful, mellow duet with William Bell, but for my money its her deep soul tracks that best showcase her remarkable voice: tracks like He's the kind of guy, Give love to save love, It ain't long enough (uptempo deep soul at its best), Children don't get weary, and Greatest love, featured here on RealAudio. Her duets with William Bell were all brilliant, it's a pity they didn't have a chance to record more duets before she moved to Atlantic, and her cooperation with Billy Vera also brought some fine moments, like Storybook children and So good (to be together).
