Clarence Carter began recording as half of the duo Clarence and Calvin (both blind). The duo cut two singles for Fairlane (in Atlanta) in 1961-2, and then had four singles released on Duke records (1963-1965). Most of these early tracks were pop oriented. Their first real soul record was tehir final release as a duo, on Atco, the beautiful Step by step (recorded at Fame). There are also five unreleased Fame masters by Clarence and Calvin. Calvin was badly injured in a car crash in 1965, but survived it. There is some confusion as to Calvin's last name, he was first referred to as Calvin Thomas, then Calvin Scott. (Can anyone ask CC?). Calvin Scott later surfaced with a single on Atco and an LP on Stax in the early 70's, and is said to be the same guy who sang with Clarence Carter.
Calvin's injury left Clarence Carter to go it alone. On his first recording the duo tradition is still evident, as his own voice is duplicated on tracks such as I stayed away too long and Don't make my baby cry. Going by the Fame masters listing (see below), both of these records were previously cut by Clarence and Calvin. As a solo artist, CC had immediate chart success with his first single, Tell Daddy (later covered more successfully by Etta James), in early 1967, and by the end of 1968 he already had two certified gold records - Slip away and Too weak to fight, a feat unparalleled at the time by James Brown, Wilson Pickett or Otis Redding. Both commercial success and high artistic quality somehow did not achieve major stardom status for Clarence Carter, but his first three Atlantic albums, recently re-released by Sequel with bonus non-LP tracks, remain absolute soul classics. In 1970 CC had a worldwide hit, and yet another gold record with the popish, disappointing Patches. The subsequent album still has some good soulful tracks. CC continued recording through the 70's, 80's and 90's, singing almost invariably about the cheatin' aspect of love, a ball which he might have started rolling in 1968 with Slip away (soul-lyrics wise, I mean, actual cheatin' may have begun even before Clarence Carter sang about it), and maintains a strong following among southern soul fans.
Unreleased material: The Fame Web Site (see my Soulinks) lists more than 20 unreleased Fame recorded CC tracks, and five unreleased Clarence and Calvin tracks (some of the tracks marked there as unreleased were actually released, but most were not). Sequel, Rhino, anyone, are you aware of that? Also, who's going to take the job of releasing the Clarence & Calvin CD.
CC on CD: almost all of Clarence Carter's albums are available on CD. His first four LP's on Atlantic were recently re-released by Sequel (UK). Each of the four contains bonus non-LP single sides, and is strongly recommended. See also the reviews section. For those who do not wish to buy all four albums, the Rhino (US) Snatching it Back compilation is recommended.
