Shades of Soul Issue 4, 1985. There was a very detailed J J Barnes article on Shades of Soul vol. 3 and vol. 4 (two parts). Sadly I haven't got vol. 3, but the full discography was on volume 4. I think the article & discog. is by Shades editor Derek Pearson.
Yoni's Remarks:
Real Nice by Johnny Barnes, and James Barnes records on the Golden Hit label have been rumored to be JJ Barnes recordings, but they are not.
The Rare Stamps - J J Barnes & Steve Mancha LP on Volt, and its CD reissue (see review page ) contain some of J J's greatest recordings.
There was a UK LP on Contempo, Groovesville Masters containing three of the above Groovesville tracks, the two Magic Touch tracks, and five other tracks of unknown origin: Your love is gone, Tine has come, Welcome to the club, I need a change, and Help me.
J J Barnes's has three other LP's: The1973 Born Again on Perception - early 70's stuff, good but not brilliant, Sara Smile on UK Contempo, late 70's, and a 1991 album on UK Motor City - Try It One More Time, produced by Northern Soul celebrity Ian Levine.
J J Barnes had three Billboard R&B chart hits: Real Humdinger peaked at 18, Baby Please Come Back Home at 9, and Now That I Got You Back at 44. These chart positions are taken from Joel Whitburn's Top R&B Singles - see Record Research Homepage
Goldmine (UK) have issued a J. J. Barnes double CD in 1998, which includes mainly (but not just) Groovesville / Revilot stuff, with some unreleased tracks. Check out its review on the Soul of the Net's reviews page .
